Another surgery
6/25/2004

Lori had an MRI yesterday that indicated a continued growth of a mass is the site where the original tumor was removed. We met with her neuro oncologist and neuro surgeon yesterday as well. They both concurred that the mass needs to be removed. Additional testing during the previous months indicate no tumor growth, however as our doctors reminded us the only way to know for sure is to do a biopsy (take it out). The mass could be one of three things: 1. New tumor growth 2. Dead tissue (necrosis) from radiation damage 3. A mixture of both. We are praying for necrosis. Necrosis is a good prognostic factor....it means the radiation did a good job of killing (both bad and good cells).

Lori and I went for a long walk next to the lake this morning with Revy. Being outside in the sun and nature was a great way to clear our heads.
We're both anxious about the upcoming surgery, but there is peace in surrendering to journey ahead. I remarked to Lori that it feels like we all put on a lead coat 10 months ago. At the time it was so heavy we could barely walk. Over time we've gotten used to it and maybe at times forgotten we were wearing it. I asked Lori to remember life before the lead coat, to imagine taking it off. She said she couldn't remember and it wasn't possible to take the coat off, but you can get your legs strong enough to ease the burden of carrying it. Maybe the test in life for all of us is how gracefully we each carry our own personal coats of lead. Lori continues to inspire me with her perseverance and her ability to continue to laugh.

Lori's surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital will hopefully be next Friday, July 2 or early the following week.

Lori and I thank you for your continued prayers, positive thoughts and encouragement.
